24-Hour Vigil at Village Gardens!
Begins: 10:00am Friday, August 17
Ends: 10:00am Saturday, August 18

I’m no Moses and it isn’t Mt. Sinai---but about a month ago I had an inspiration to go to the “hill” which is our Trinity church site at Village Gardens to pray, listen, talk, and learn for 24 hours.

It’s a splendid location but, at the moment, the land is very bare so I’ll take a desk, chairs and try to find some kind of “tent” shade so I won’t die on the mountain! (It will probably be 110 degrees in the shade that day!!)

You’re invited to come out anytime to join me and/or talk to me or just to bring me some ICE. I’ll try to arrange for some iced tea/water and coffee---and whatever shade I have, I’ll share. Maybe even some donuts on Saturday morning. Be careful when you climb up the hill because there is “silt fencing” (to prevent erosion) which surrounds the property.

Keep Trinity UMC and me in your prayers as we make this transition and as I spend 24 hours on the mountaintop listening.

P.S. Anyone have a shade-tent contraption open on all sides but enough to keep the sun out? Call the church office if you’re willing to lend it.

THE FROSTS AND BURNETTS

On Sunday, August 12th, a floral arrangement will be in the sanctuary in honor of Sheridan and Nellie (Gould) Frost and Earle & Eugenia Burnett.

Sheridan and Nellie Frost were the first couple to be married at Trinity United Methodist in 1892. Their daughter, Eugenia, married Earle Burnett and served as a music director.  Eugenia’s daughter, Sandra, married Bob Miller at Trinity on May 20, 1956.

Sandra and Bob are traveling through Lincoln and will be attending services this Sunday.

To
Cindy Williams & Chad Boling, Youth Directors at Trinity
Farewell Reception following Worship on August 19th

No, it wasn’t Sonny & Cher, Abbott & Costello, George & Gracie, the Lone Ranger & Tonto, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis, or even Cheech & Chong—but the teriffic “twosome” here at Trinity working with youth for the past few years has been CINDY & CHAD!

We’re sad to be losing this inspiring/amazing team. Cindy is going “full-time” to teach for Lincoln Public Schools. Chad and his wife Trista (former college intern at Trinity!) are headed for one of the 13 excellent UMC seminaries---Drew Theological School in Madison, New Jersey (about 1 hour from New York City).

The average lifespan of a Youth Worker in any church is approximately 2-3 years. Cindy has lasted/endured/thrived in this job for the past 10 years! Her long tenure in this position was, no doubt, a record for Trinity’s 100+ years. Quite an accomplishment! Cindy has done a remarkable job with Trinity’s Youth year in and year out. Some of those 15 year olds she encountered in her first year here are now 25 years old with children of their own.

I asked Cindy to share with me some of the activities she’s done with Trinity Youth over the years. It’s a very impressive list of: Neighborhood Halloween Parties, Thanksgiving Dinners, Christmas parties, 14 mission trips (in every direction!), Youth Sundays, Confirmation Classes, Lock-ins, Retreats, Rollerskating/Lazer Quest/Swim parties/Snowball fights…and the list goes on and on…. The list includes, not only projects for Trinity, but also outreach events at the Gathering Place, People’s City Mission, Nursing Homes, etc. Cindy has worked with and nurtured 4 college interns and one Co-Director (Chad). Thank-you Cindy for your hard work, dedication, commitment, and tender love and care for all our Trinity kids whose lives you have touched and helped launch into the world on the right foot.

Chad has been a college intern at Trinity for the past three years and he co-directed the Youth with Cindy this past year while attending/graduating from UNL. Chad was the quieter, more introspective side of this dynamic duo who engaged and at times pushed Trinity Youth to think and talk about their faith. He helped them articulate their faith journey while Cindy worked at getting them to “act” on their faith through outreach and mission. But their respective roles with youth were also very interchangeable and it was obvious that they worked well together.

Chad has been approved by Trinity’s Staff Parish Relations Committee as an “inquiring candidate” for ministry as he pursues a theological degree and makes decisions about his future. I hope he (and Trista!) will come back to NE to become an ordained clergyperson serving churches in NE. Chad and I met regularly throughout this past school year to talk about his “call to ministry” and his interest in clarifying that call as a seminary student. Trinity has an important opportunity to support and stand beside him all the way. I envy Chad’s admission to seminary this fall. It’s such an exciting and challenging place to be. Lets keep Chad and Trista in our prayers as they move into this new chapter in their lives.

Finally, I can’t say it as well as Cindy did in her final paragraph to me: “My most treasured memories will be those that include watching ten years worth of youth mature and graduate knowing that they had a loving church family waiting for them whenever they returned, loving them along that journey, and enjoying who they were and who they were becoming. This is one terrific group of youth and I love being around them. They are fun, energetic and about the most thoughtful people I have ever met. I pray that they remember the talks we’ve had, discussing how much God loves them and that Chad and I loved them, too!”

Thank-you Cindy and Chad for all you’ve done here. It’s obvious the Holy Spirit has been working through both of you. May God’s blessings be with you now and always!

Jim Keyser
