Kenya Connection - 2012 Mission Volunteers

 Jan Brockley

Jan is returning for the 7th time to Meru, Kenya. She is passionate about helping empower the woman in the Kaaga Synod in Meru, Kenya. Her professoinal skills of teaching and owning a touring company aid her for organizing mission trips. Jan received the 2010 Humanitarian Award from her alma mater, Nebraska Wesleyan University. Her efforts have been very successful because of the bishop Wiliam Muruiki of Meru and Trinity Methodist Church. She has been on mission trips in the U.S., Mexico, South America, India, and Russia but it is Africa that has captured her heart.

Traveling is our passion and visiting Africa is on our “Bucket List” but that’s not the ONLY reason we are joining Jan on this mission trip. We are both strong believers in mission work and believe this is a great opportunity to reach out beyond just writing a check. We have talked with tourists who have returned from Africa wishing they could have done more for the people. By combining one week of mission work and one week of touring, we feel this will give us the chance to see grateful villagers with their happy smiles as they receive sustaining gifts. The safari will be a wonderful way to finish our visit and we’re looking forward to it. It will be a privilege to go with Jan and also represent Trinity United Methodist Church on this mission trip. We truly believe it is more fun to give than to receive.

 Brian Hefner

I am very excited about our journey to Meru, Kenya to help provide sustainable agriculture and livestock to the people of Meru. God has touch my life in so many ways and I believe it is time to give back. “What is God inviting me to do?” God is inviting me to touch the lives of people across the globe. What an outstanding opportunity to meet the people of Meru and see a world that is so much different than ours. I have not traveled to another country and cannot wait to mingle with the people of Kenya. I have been truly blessed to know so many people from Trinity United Methodist Church. The congregation has supported the Kenya mission for the past 6 years and their generousity is amazaing. TUMC is a local church providing global mission. TUMC is outstanding. I pray that I will be able to convery TUMC's support and care to the people of Meru.

Will Maynard

Hi this is Will and I am an eighth grader at Irving Middle School and I play sports like basketball, soccer, football and track.  I am obviously Jan Brockley's grandson so as I was growing up we would travel a lot.  I want to go because I think it is a great opportunity and I am very glad to have it.  I can't wait to get to know everyone else who is going better and get a great experiance out of it!

Jessie Maynard

I am Jessie, I am 16 and a sophomore at Lincoln Southeast High school. I run cross country and play tennis. I am also very involved in my church, First Plymouth. I am a very outgoing person and I want to change lives. I am going on this mission trip because I want to help people less fortunate than me. I am so lucky and blessed to be given this opportunity and hopefully I can make a difference in someone's life and change the way I live for the better.

 Frank Hefner

My name is Frank. I am 16 years old and I am a sophomore at Lincoln Southeast High School. I want to go to Kenya because I think it would be a really good experience to see what other people have to live with. I am looking forward to meeting the kids of St. Stephens Church and working with them to build a better church.

Gifford and Alice Tompkins

We are looking forward to the mission trip to Kenya in July.  The results in improving lives through self sustaining resources and training from prior trips is impressive!  We have been involved in mission work in Mexico with similar results where children are now in school (with required uniforms made available).  Many are now high school graduates and enrolled in seminary training.  The community has been physically and spiritually transformed.

We are pleased with the African churches positive contribution to American Methodism, through encouraging the preservation of Wesley Christian principles and traditions at General Conference.   In return, we will be happily providing assistance to better the lives of our African brothers and sisters and those they serve. We know our lives will be richly enriched and blessed!

Charlie Gallentine

I am an eighth grader at Irving Middle School. I like to play tennis, basketball, and baseball. I have always wanted to go to Africa, and what better way to do that than by helping other people on this beautiful planet. This mission trip is a great way to that. I am proud to do my part to help out. I feel that this will help open my eyes to the world around me. I also feel that I will gain valuable experience. I hope to improve the lives of the people of Meru, Kenya.

Caleb Martin

Caleb Martin, age 14, goes to Irving Middle School and is excited to do the IB program at Lincoln High School next year.  Caleb enjoys playing cello and tennis.  He has an older brother and younger sister.  Caleb is a member of Jazz Band, Chorus, and Student Council at his school.

Marie Sitz

Hi…my name is Marie Sitz. I am 14 years old and a freshman at O’Neill High School. I’ve been to Israel twice on mission trips, and have done a lot of traveling with my mom around the United States as well as 9 other countries. I am in speech, one-acts, cheerleading, golf, FCCLA, jazz/concert/marching bands, choir, the high school musical, play the violin, and sing in our church youth group band. I am so excited to go on this mission trip, meet the people of Africa and share my faith. I also can’t wait to meet the people I will be traveling with.

Anne Sitz

My name is Anne Sitz and I just qualified for my first senior discount….I’ll let you do the math! Our family resides in O’Neill, Nebraska, and we have attended a non-denominational church for the past 28 years. I am so very excited to be a part of the Lincoln-Meru Missions Team. Traveling has been a big part of my life as is "serving others before self". I have been blessed with being part of other mission teams to Ghana, Africa; India, Israel as well as the United States. Jan’s passion and insight to help the people of Meru to become self-sufficient with sustainable agriculture and livestock is awesome, and I am looking forward to sharing this experience with each of you, and to glean a lot from this Kenya experience.
